Breakfast croissant sandwiches are a great way to start your day. It’s quick, easy, and delicious. Sure you could order one at a cafĂ© but it tastes so much better homemade! There’s just something about the combination of egg, cheese, and bacon—or sausage or ham or whatever else you want to throw in there that makes a breakfast sandwich taste so good. In this article, you are going to learn “How to Make a Breakfast Croissant Sandwich.
What is a croissant?
A croissant is a flaky, buttery pastry that is made by layering dough and folding it over repeatedly with butter. The process of creating this layered dough, called laminated dough, requires repeated rolling and folding—hence the name “laminated.”
According to the Smithsonian magazine, the Austrian Kipferl, which is made of butter or lard and sometimes sugar and almonds, served as the inspiration for the croissant. The delicious baked good originated in Austria. However, the French innovated the baked good by using puffed pastry which would later be known as “The Croissant.”
Breakfast croissant sandwich ingredients
Today’s recipe was truly inspired by Starbucks’ “Double-Smoked Bacon, Cheddar & Egg Sandwich.” I used to order this sandwich all the time until I came across the croissant bun at Aldi and decided to make my own breakfast sandwich. Making a homemade breakfast croissant sandwich is easy as 1,2,3.
Here are a few simple ingredients you need:
- 1 croissant bun
- 1 egg
- 2 slices of bacon (I ❤️ turkey bacon but any kind of meat will do)
- 1 slice of cheese (I use Swiss or Colby cheese)
- 1 tsp of Everything Bagel seasoning (Any seasoning will do)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Equipment you’ll need:
Toast your buns
Toasting your buns is the first step to making a delicious breakfast croissant sandwich. The key here is to toast them until they are golden brown, but not burnt. If you’re using a toaster, place your bread in the slots and set it on “light.” When done, take them out of the slots and set them aside on a plate so you can start cooking your meat and egg.
Breakfast croissant sandwich: choose your protein
There is no particular order to cook everything but I like to start by cooking our meat first. I use turkey bacon but you can use any meat you want for your sandwich. Sausage, bacon, and ham are all great options. Just make sure you choose a slice of meat with similar cooking instructions so that all of your components are ready at about the same time. For example, if you’re going for bacon or sausage as your source of meat and want them cooked to a crisp—not floppy—it may take a bit longer to cook so you’ll want to make sure they’re done before cooking the egg and melting the cheese.
Different ways to cook your eggs
The next step is to cook your egg and add a dash of seasoning such as Everything Bagel seasoning. There are many ways to cook eggs for a breakfast croissant sandwich, and they are all delicious. Here are some tips:
- For sunny side up, cook the egg in a pan over low heat on each side until the egg whites are cooked through, and the yolk is still runny.
- For scrambled, beat two eggs together with salt and pepper in a nonstick pan over medium-low heat, then stir constantly until fluffy and yellow.
- For over easy, cook the egg in a pan over medium heat on each side until the egg white turns opaque.
- For over-medium, cook the egg for about 1-2 minutes on each side. The yolk should be creamy (yet not thin and runny).
- For over-hard, cook the egg in a pan over medium heat for about 2 minutes on each side until the yolk is fully cooked.
Breakfast croissant sandwich: choose your cheese
If you want your cheese slightly melted, I suggest putting it on top of your egg in the pan, once it is almost done. Here is a list of cheeses that would go great with your sandwich:
- Cheddar
- Swiss
- Provolone
- Mozzarella
- Goat cheese
- Feta
- Brie
Assemble your sandwich
- Place your meat on the bottom bun.
- Add the egg and cheese.
- Place the top bun on your sandwich and voilá you have a breakfast croissant sandwich.
