Why You Should Try Crockpot Pulled BBQ Chicken
If you’re looking for a new way to make pulled chicken, this is it. The crockpot does all the work for you, and all you have to do is shred up some meat. It’s so easy and saves time on weeknights when dinner needs to be ready fast!
Crockpot Pulled BBQ Chicken Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 2 cups barbecue sauce
- 1/2 red onion
- Morton Nature’s Seasons Seasoning Blend (You can use your favorite seasoning blend).
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 1 pack of Texas toast bread
Directions
- Place chicken breast into the crockpot.
- Season chicken to your liking.
- Cut the onion in half, then slice the onions

- Once the chicken is done cooking in the crockpot, you can shred the chicken with two forks or take the chicken out and use a mixer to shred the chicken and place the shredded chicken breast back into the crockpot.
- Cover and cook on high for 3 hours.
Best Types of Breads to Use
There are a few different types of breads that work well with this recipe. The first is a hoagie roll, which is simply a long roll with pointy ends. It’s the type of bread you’d get at Subway or any other sandwich shop, and it’s perfect for serving your crockpot pulled bbq chicken.
The second option is brioche buns; these buns are light and airy yet sturdy enough to support heavy fillings like BBQ chicken and cheese without falling apart on you mid-bite (or worse yet, before you even get started). Brioche buns also happen to be delicious–so if you want some extra flavor on top of everything else then use this bread.
And finally there are pretzel buns: these are pretty self explanatory–they’re just regular pretzels turned into sandwiches! If you’re looking for something different than what we’ve talked about so far then this might be right up your alley because it brings together two things people love: pretzels & sandwiches
The Best Ways to Shred Chicken
There are two different ways that you can shred your chicken. The first way is to use two forks. Place one fork in each hand and use the tines to pull apart the chicken into small pieces. This method takes some time and requires a bit of patience. However, If you find that this method is too difficult, try using an electric hand-held mixer.
Place your cooked chicken in a medium size bowl, and set your electric hand mixer on low speed until all the pieces are shredded into small bits of shredded chicken. This method saves time because there’s no need for additional prep work, however it requires having access to a electric hand-held mixer!
Serving Suggestions
The possibilities are endless, but here are some serving suggestions:
- Coleslaw and pickles: Coleslaw is a classic BBQ side dish, but if you’re looking for something different, try adding some pickles to the mix. They’re great with pulled chicken!
- Salad: A big green salad can be served as a main course or as an accompaniment to your BBQ chicken and other dishes. If you want to make it even more filling, add some beans or chickpeas (or both).
- Fries/potato wedges/tots: French fries are always good–but how about trying something different? Potatoes are delicious when baked or fried into crispy wedges or potato tots! You can also get creative with your toppings; try experimenting with ranch, cheese sauce and bacon bits instead of the usual ketchup on top.
Storing leftover Crockpot Pulled BBQ Chicken
Properly cooling your leftover crockpot pulled BBQ chicken is crucial. To ensure its safety and freshness, I highly recommend using an ice bath method.
Simply fill one bowl with cold water and ice, and place another bowl containing the pulled chicken inside. Place the bowl with the chicken over the bowl filled with ice water. Stir the pulled chicken and this will rapidly lower the temperature and prevent any potential bacterial growth, allowing you to enjoy your delicious leftovers worry-free.
